It opened in 2005 as part of Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group, with chef Gabriel Kreuther as its founding chef, who earned the restaurant its first Michelin star and a three star New York Times review before departing to open his own eponymous restaurant. The Modern subsequently earned a second Michelin star and has maintained both for over a decade. The restaurant is currently helmed by Chef Thomas Allen, who previously cooked at three Michelin starred Eleven Madison Park and three Michelin starred Per Se. The dining room looks out over MoMA's sculpture garden through floor to ceiling windows. The restaurant operates as two distinct experiences: a more casual bar room serving à la carte dishes, and the formal dining room where the tasting menus are served. The dining room is considered the source of the restaurant's Michelin distinction.
