About

The Grill is located inside the Seagram Building on Park Avenue, designed by modernist architect Mies van der Rohe and completed in 1958. The space was previously home to the legendary Four Seasons Restaurant, whose interiors were designated a New York City landmark in 1989. Major Food Group, the team behind Michelin starred Carbone and Torrisi, reopened the space as The Grill in 2017, with a menu designed by chef Mario Carbone as a callback to iconic New York steakhouses like Delmonico's. Both the Infatuation and New York Times critic Pete Wells named it the best new restaurant of 2017. The room retains its landmark interiors including Philip Johnson designed gold chain curtains, Richard Lippold sculptures above the bar, and gold trimmed dishware that has remained largely unchanged for decades. The restaurant is known for its tableside theatrics, most notably the pasta alla press, which involves a centuries old silver duck press used to extract juices from whole duck directly at the table.

The Visit

The Grill delivers a lavish, theatrical dining experience that far exceeded expectations. The reviewer was impressed by the opulent gold decor and the seamless blend of corporate elegance with old-school steakhouse charm. Standout dishes included the prime rib, honey mustard duckling, and the buttered rum baked Alaska, all praised for their unique flavors and presentation. Service was described as outstanding, contributing to a memorable night that set a new standard for New York steakhouses.

Quotes

"It's a savory pasta that I've never had anything similar to. The meat flavor in this pasta is so rich."
"It's so tender for a New York strip. In addition to the dry aged funk, you also get this extra smoky flavor. That crust is hands down the best of the four. Not even close."
"[Prime Rib] That interior is just so tender and completely drenched in that jus. That crust gives each bite such a savory, smoky crunch to it"
"[Honey Mustard Duckling] You get hit with this sweetness. Honestly, it's so sweet, it's almost like candy. But I really like how you get the sweetness from the honey first and then the spiciness from the mustard after. This is 10 out of 10"
"I don't know where my expectations were going into this, but it vastly exceeded them. The steak, easily one of the best you've ever had in the city, and I don't even know if that was my favorite thing we tried. That duckling was outrageously good."

Our Reflection

The Grill is a masterclass in blending nostalgia with modern luxury. Each course, from the prime rib to the inventive baked Alaska, is delivered with a sense of occasion that elevates the meal beyond the ordinary. The gold-accented space, attentive service, and thoughtful touches like complimentary lemon shortbread cookies create a sense of celebration. The reviewer’s delight in both the food and ambiance is palpable, marking The Grill as a destination where expectations are not just met but surpassed. It’s a place that honors tradition while confidently forging its own identity.
